Scanning Track

Scanning

Tracking the Trackers

Summary

The Scanning Track will be focused on helping developers collect data and provide metrics on issues of privacy or security. This could consist of crawling websites to identify the prevalence of 3rd party tracking objects or instrumenting a browser plugin or mobile smartphone to monitor/block unwanted cookies.

The leader for this track is Ashkan Soltani.

Goals

  • Increase awareness of the prevalence of tracking
  • Provide reliable, actionable metrics surrounding privacy practices online
  • Create tools that enable the user to view and control the information they share (see other tracks too).

Projects

Resources/Prep

Prior to the event, I would recommend consulting the resources page and getting familiar with the background articles and tools related to your project.

I would highly recommend becoming familiar with the 'online tracking' section as well as setting up tools such as FouthParty or Selenium/Watir if you're planning to run crawlers.

Additionally, becoming familiar with github and having web hosting (if you're planning on running a crawler) would be advised.
