One in four women and one in seven men have been affected by domestic violence. Cell phones and technology can be a vital link to support and public safety services such as Safe Horizons, the NYC Family Justice Center, The Mayor's Office on Combating Domestic Violence or the New York Courts.
Donated cell phones for example have provided invaluable help for more than 10 years to victims trying to escape domestic abuse through universal 911. Social media organization now have a definitely role to play as well to fight this important social problem.
My app allows DV victims who do not have a mobile phone, or have a compromised phone, or have a second uncompromised phone access their friends on social media and alert them on their status - either during an emergency or while they plan their escape from their abuser. The NYC Family Justice Center references "Sleeping with the Enemy" as a faithful way to create an exit plan. Using Twilio and the Foursquare API, Twitter, Facebook, and Foursquare status updates can be made at one time online through the app. In addition updates can be relayed by way of text or voice message via Twilio's services.
* The website is best viewed on mobile.
* The Twilio capability only works for sending Texts. Please type just one phone number in the "Text" field; write an update then click submit.
