The next best thing since the banana phone, this is the Open Secure Telephony Network (OSTN) project.
The service is a public testbed with the goal of promoting the use of free, open protocols, standards and software, to power end-to-end secure voice communications on mobile devices, as well as with desktop computers.
The Ostel.me Android app is based upon the open-source CSipSimple app, which utilizes the pjsip and libraries to provide transport and media encryption and verification.

What are we building: We will code a method for auto account generation with credentials sent with an email automatically encrypted with a PGP key as possible. We will also develop a federated infrastructure so that different groups can run their own instance of "Ostel" and have them communicate seamlessly with one another. To make sure that this is legal and functional around the world, we will investigate laws and technical restrictions for VOIP and develop a database of information for countries around the world.
Who is this for: This is for people around the world in high risk environments and anyone who is interested in affordable, secure and private communication.
Our goal for this weekend: we want to get to a functional landing page for signup and on our way to a functional federated calling infrastructure. Have an initial database of laws and VOIP usability standards from a country on each continent (except Antarctica).
Our starting point: We are writing the PGP encryption system from scratch. We are building the federation on top of existing OStel code.
Anything else we should know: This is part of the Guardian suite of apps for secure mobile phone communication.
What are we solving: making secure and private calls has been out of reach for the average person, the startup company and the struggling rights activist. Nor is there information on the legal and technical limitations of doing so in countries and over carries around the world.
What have we gotten done? Over this weekend, we have made significant progress in our alpha demo. We've removed identified additional clients that can receive calls on Mac, PC, Linux, iPhone, & Blackberry. We created a unique new user signup system that allows users to register and immediately be sent an email with a link to their credentials via SSL. For testing, we have started compiling information on VOIP laws in countries from every continent.
What is our economic sustainability model? We are exploring several options from selling pre-packaged solutions in hardware to in-app purchases for ringtones, backgrounds and cool plugins.
What is our environmental sustainability model? We will have the most efficient code, thereby reducing server load and reducing our amount of nonrenewable energy consumption.
What license is our work available under? Our content is all available under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License. Our code is available publicly under MPL 1.1.
