An HTML5 game that responds to beats
Amalgorave is a crowd sourced algorave engine, procedurally generating music for near unlimited users in real time.
Totally unique in each instance, but easy to create, users start by building a simple bass line and then various percussive sounds by choosing between low, medium or high tones to send to the randomiser.
With the track basics created, the users can then hit the spacebar (or click it on mobile) to build a score. closest to in-time will gain score, too far away and it'll decay.
Score can be spent of effect samples, transitions, drops and other effects, that when created by a multitude of people creates compelling and fun algorave music that's surprisingly professional, for something created with just a few buttons.
The only way to truly experience this hack is to wade in and try your hand at the music generation.
A custom visualizer for the track created was made as part of our hack through webGL, synchronizing with the timing information passed between the servers.
The hack was mad by generating the engine in Max MSP, using the local network to communicate with a central hub that also served the web pages and sent timing and fourier information to the visualiser.
The app responds in real time connection not just the users and server, but each user as well, to ensure that people don't tread on each other's toes.
Possibly the first gamified approach to creating the algorave style of music, we leveraged the skills of all three members of our team, to create something we think is truly exceptional, and fun to use too.
